“High school Harry Makes Good.” Jim Meade, Ph.D., is author of 30 books and hundreds of magazine articles. His best-known series? – 5 books in the famous Dummies series. His personal favorite? – The Answer to Cancer, a lighthearted guide to alternative prevention. Biggest seller? Using PowerPoint with Que Publishing, which caught the rising wave of interest in desktop graphics. Most productive year? 1992, when he published four books and more than a million words. His best candidate for the Hamilton authors’ bookshelf? – The Human Resources Software Handbook, published by leading business publisher, John Wiley. Altogether his books have sold about 750,000 copies.
Meade currently lectures around the world on stress relief, consciousness, and the Self (reflecting an ongoing fascination with our college motto). He is a certified teacher of Transcendental Meditation as taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, worked personally with Maharishi, and is conversant with TM stars like filmmaker David Lynch, the Beach Boys, and Prudence Farrow (from the song “Dear Prudence.”) With his wife he has instructed close to 2,000 people in the TM technique or, as he calls it, “whispered the infinite” to them.
Recent speaking appearances include a Rotary Club in Dar Es Salaam, a school in Budapest, a military school in Kathmandu, and a yoga studio in Hong Kong. Always grateful for his Hamilton scholarship, Meade has remained Buff and Blue throughout his life – speaking, writing, working hard, and nurturing always a small we-try-harder edge. His Ph.D. in English, with Distinguished Commendation, is from Northwestern University.
