After graduating from Hamilton College I went on to continue my education at Fordham University School of Law. I was the Articles Editor for the Fordham Law Review.
In the fall of 1969 I joined the law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, where I was a partner until June of 2003. I was the National Practice Leader of the Litigation Department and the founding partner of the firm’s Committee on Diversity.
From 1978-87 I served as the Mayor of the Village of Ocean Beach in Suffolk County. In 1987 I was appointed Special Counsel to the New York State Commission on Government Integrity and served until 1991. I was appointed by the Chief Judge to the Commission to Promote Public Confidence in Judicial Elections and was Counsel to the Governor’s Judicial Screening Committee and a member of the Task Force on Minority Representation on the Bench.
As a member of the American Bar Association, I served on the Election Law committee and was a special advisor on election reform. At the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, I served on the federal legislation, election law and municipal affairs committees. I was honored to receive from the Legal Aid Society its Pro Bono Award in 1998. I have enjoyed being a past trustee of ArtsConnection, the Riverside Park Fund and the New York Preservation League among other non-profit organizations.
In 1987 I became a member of Hamilton’s Board of Trustees and later in 1999 I had the opportunity
to serve as Acting President of the college. I have deeply enjoyed my association with my fellow
Trustees and the College.
In 2002 I became the fifth President of Purchase College, State University of New York and have served in that capacity for the past 14 years. The College is recognized as one of the “top ten public liberal arts colleges” by U.S. News and World Report’s Best Colleges.
I have been a life-long resident of New York City and Fire Island. In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my two children and their families, including seven grandchildren and my partner Keiren Fox, who just sold her art/environmental website and plans to return to her art in the next stage of our lives.
